This exquisite little necklace is a play on ancient Samurai armor and the silk cords that connect the armor plates and accoutrements. Everything is hand-braided and hand-fabricated.

About the artist

Tamra Thomas-Gentry is an award-winning self-taught metalsmith and textile artisan. She has maintained a solo studio practice since 2005 after leaving a position as an administrator at DePaul University. Tamra graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis, earned a bachelor’s degree in applied physics from Florida A&M University, and received her master’s degree in education from Vanderbilt University. She has taken a variety of jewelry fabrication and textile workshops with master craftsmen, and she has taught metalsmithing and other specialty technique classes at a local Chicago art center. Tamra is a trained photographer who loves both nature and abstract macro photography. Adding to the creative chaos she is a classical pianist and, since the pandemic began, she has developed an interest in various types of cultural and historical woodwind instruments. She's currently teaching herself to play the flute as a diversion from braiding.
