Opening Reception: Mosaics Invitational / Thursday, February 15 / @ 100 Pier 4

The Societies of Arts + Crafts & American Mosaic Artists are proud to present Mosaic Arts International 2018 Invitational — Sophie Drouin. The opening reception will take place Thursday, February 15 from 6-9pm. Sophie Drouin is a second generation, classically trained mosaic artist. This reception is free and open to the public.

Artist Talk: Sophie Druoin / Saturday, February 17 / @ 100 Pier 4

Sophie Drouin is a second-generation mosaic artist. She studied mosaic techniques first with her father, who was trained in Italy. She later travelled to Europe to study in Italy and France. In addition to Sophie’s career as a mosaic artist and teacher, she is also a violinist in the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Join us for an Artist Talk on Saturday, February 17 at 1:00pm.

Workshop: Bakelite Ring Making / Saturday, March 3 / 100 Pier 4

This class will be about upcycling old Bakelite into finished, wearable jewelry—most likely in the form of a ring. Students will cut, file, sand, and polish found Bakelite and gain a kinesthetic understanding of what the tolerances of this material are. In addition to this, workshop will cover the historical context of this material in the form of a short lecture, as it is a very important plastic. Instructor will discuss how to identify and buy real Bakelite.
