The Society of Arts + Crafts is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2018 John D. Mineck Furniture Fellowship. The Mineck Fellowship, funded by the John D. Mineck Foundation and administered by the Society, awards $25,000 to a young-in-career furniture artist to help them succeed in their journey. Funding is intended to help furniture artists reach the next step in their career, whether it be purchasing new tools, traveling to work with a mentor or developing media for self-marketing.

2017 Mineck Fellowship Awardee Jack Mauch was able to use the fellowship to fund three interrelated goals that would have an immediate and long-term impact on his career: to buy equipment that is necessary for his continued growth and independence; to undertake a course of study in digital fabrication technology; and to dedicate a period of time to the development of his current work that focuses on patterned veneer surfaces by exploring the possibilities focusing 3D modeling and CNC milling to aid in veneering compound-curved forms and complex geometry.

The John D. Mineck Foundation was formed in 2007 to award charitable and educational gifts reflecting John D. Mineck's interests and values. John was a past President of the Society of Arts and Crafts Board of Trustees and a beloved member of Boston's cultural community. The Furniture Fellowship developed from John's love for making fine furniture and the skill, passion, and dedication exhibited by those in the field. In an effort to support the craft that John loved and the people who make it, the John D. Mineck Foundation created this Fellowship to encourage and support a young-in-career furniture artist.

Applications are open now through August 13, 2018. The winner will be announced in early September. This year's award will be juried by Society staff and 2015 Mineck Fellowship winner Sarah Marriage. To apply please visit the application here.
