My Life as a Basket

My Life as a Basket is part of series that, along with basketry, includes jewelry and purses. All artwork in the My Life series tell stories through found objects assembled in unexpected ways. Fortunately, I have a surprisingly extensive collection of found objects that I have squirreled away over many years to be part of this series. Annealed steel wire is used to form the outline of the basket and handle. No part of this basket is woven. Instead, a wire grid is made on the bottom, sides, and handle of the basket into which small objects are wired. Vintage buttons are used for the basket’s feet. I’ve had many interesting conversations with people who see My Life as a Basket and tell me a personal story relating to a particular object they’ve seen on the basket. Because many of the objects I use are one of a kind, each basket will vary with the specific found objects in it.
