The Galaxy Bowl is made of 10 species of wood, including European hornbeam, bocote, narra, zebrawood, satine, yellowheart, wenge, sapele, and boxwood, and is finished with an artist-dyed maple veneer. There are 840 pieces of wood in this 3-inch bowl with an ebony base. I love the movement in this bowl, especially the dyed veneer diamonds. This bowl measures 3.125 inches diameter x 2 inches high.

About the artist

Martha Collins was trained as a cabinetmaker for 2 &1/2 years by the State of Michigan. She was the first woman through the program thanks to Title IX. She apprenticed in a shop specializing in wood jewelry, where she learned about exotic woods, how to dye maple veneer, and the joys of lamination in creating small, intricate objects. In the mid-1980’s her family moved to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington to a house and shop she designed and built. At this time she had several galleries on the West Coast selling her bracelets. In 1995 she went to work for Admiral Marine Works in their joinery department making furnishings for high-end yachts. Since 2000 she has been showing her work at the best juried national art shows including Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, where she won Best Artist New to the Show Award in 2019....Read MoreRead Less
